ANU Energy Change Institute



The Australian National University Energy Change Institute provides authoritative leadership in energy research, education and public policy through a portfolio ranging from the science and engineering of energy generation and energy efficiency, to energy economics, regulation, security, sociology and policy.

The ECI comprises more than 300 staff and PhD students from all seven Colleges of ANU, and over $100 million in infrastructure and facilities, supported by a major portfolio of external grant funding.

Our scholars work across 20 research clusters, spanning artificial photosynthesis to wind energy.

We are technology and policy neutral. We undertake research and education in key areas of energy technology and energy policy without favouring one particular area over another. This can and should create an open forum for good ideas leading to energy change.

The ECI provides educational programs through the Master of Energy Change multidisciplinary postgraduate degree program, and professional short courses.

The former provides both a strong basis in the fundamentals of economics, governance, policy and technology related to energy change.

The latter provide updates for policymakers and professionals on recent advances in the science, technology, social, policy, economic and governance aspects of energy change.

Zero-Carbon Energy for the Asia-Pacific

In 2018 a team led by the Institute won the ANU Grand Challenge Scheme, receiving $10 million in funding over five years for the Zero-Carbon Energy for the Asia-Pacific project.

Headed by ECI Director, Professor Ken Baldwin, the interdisciplinary project involves researchers from across the University.
